The Puritans came from England and settled in North America establishing the colony of New England. They did not support or encouraged playful activities. They were more concerned with religious life and believed that games distracted people and therefore, condemned sports mainly to prevent gambling and drinking involved in it. But this encouraged the formation of taverns that were established areas away from Puritan’s hold like Philadelphia or Boston that held contests, games of dart and cards, horse racing, cock fighting, boxing and shooting contests. As a result Puritans indirectly led America to open itself to amusement activities.
